ROKUS.NET

This blog is no longer updated.

Since I own the domain name for a couple more years, and the hosting was paid-in-advance, it's still here. But I've moved on to Hawaii, and no longer have the need to publish all the sorts of neat stuff that made up the contents of this website.

If you've linked to me, you are invited to unlink, as your readers will no longer be presented with new content. Thanks, Steve

Blogstuff Google indexes this site every two or three days - and crawls through all my linked content.

  Milblogger down.
Blogstuff Chuck Ziegenfuss, of From My Position... / TC Override got nailed by a IED in Iraq yesterday. His wife guest-blogs that it appears that he'll lose a finger or two and have damage to his hand, but was initially concerned only about the status of his 'package'.

Click the link, read some of his archives, and then drop a note of support in the comments.

  Administrator notes.
Blogstuff Trackback: Sick and tired of cleaning up trackback spam - removed the trackback capability from Postnuke (installed via instructions here).

There's a few dirtbags left that are doing GET / on the index. Couldn't figure this out - they weren't loading the images, the php/rss scripts, just "/"

Found an article somewhere else that indicates that this is indicative of folks just trying to get themselves added to your referral pages, in the hopes that you're running one of the "automatic linking of my last 24 hours' referrals"-type javascripts.

I'll eventually figure out how to drop them without draconian measures (they're sucking 27KB bandwidth per visit - that's not an issue yet).

In the meantime, it appears that Google indexes my site on Thursday afternoons. Presented for your perusal, ROKUS.net's "Top Ten" - articles specifically referenced by Google as of this writing (e.g. not casual viewers, but articles specifically requested by URL):

1: The Annual Army/Navy Game. - (468 Reads)
2: NAV Corporate Password Recovery - (440 Reads)
3: Human trafficking *from* South Korea - (371 Reads)
4: USB drives - shut them down... - (326 Reads)
5: Sgt Jenkins plea-bargains to 30 days/dishonorable discharge. - (272 Reads)

6: The Nodong Shinmun Quick Phraseology Worksheet - (262 Reads)
7: Shoot me when I buy one of these. - (252 Reads)
8: Free Credit Reports - compliments of Uncle Sam and the FACT Act. - (236 Reads)
9: Drunk dude beats up bus driver - (234 Reads)
10: Advertisement - (233 Reads)

  Blog Silence: Long Trip
Blogstuff Sorry about the radio silence this month. An installation job at Tango and Walker burned me out. Hopefully, some time off next month will get me back on track.

  Red Cross donation via Amazon
Blogstuff If you haven't yet pitched in to help, the squashed Amazon graphic on the left will take you to the American Red Cross' relief page. As I write this, they've collected $2.8 million. Yes, your 10 bucks will help.

Quick code to display this donation box on your website:
<!-- Begin Amazon Honor System Paybox -->
<img src="http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/tipbox/A1J1JDQWBS9GWQ/T3MYIILZNTKFV2"
usemap="#T3MYIILZNTKFV2" border="0" alt="Amazon Honor System">

</map>
<!-- End Amazon Honor System Paybox -->
The graphic is 200x200 pixels by default, if you count those types of things.

  KimcheeGI on Cafe' USA
Blogstuff On 9 Nov (last Tuesday), the KimcheeGI @ BudaeChigae reported the opening of Cafe' USA - the US Embassy's attempt to allow "Netizins [to] engage in direct dialogue with the U.S. Embassy in Seoul." Today, he reprints an article from YTN that says:
"An Internet site established by the U.S. Embassy in Seoul has proven itself a nuisance in an unexpected way, with members of the public using the forum to denounce South Korea's government and president."

Yep. Just like USFK's BBS.

To those who plan to manage comment-heavy websites (you know who you are) - consider using a comment scoring system like slashdot's SlashCode to minimize trolling.

Follow up from Seoul Computer Club presentation
Blogstuff On 13 Nov 04, I presented this presentation to the Seoul Computer Club.

During the Q&A period after the presentation, several questions were posed that were not covered during the briefing. Several of these topics are included here:

To start blogging right now, go to www.tblog.com, and enter a username, password (twice), email, and zip code. Recommend you change your timezone to GMT+0900 (Seoul), and select "no" for 15 day demo. Once you've created your account, log in, and start writing. Your blog URL is http://your_user_name.tblog.com - see http://sdcarroll.tblog.com for an example. (Obviously, you'll need to pick a username that isn't used, but easy to remember.)

The difference between a blog and a web page is the frequency in which you update the information on the page. Additionally, it was pointed out that "blogs" in Korean are considered the quite-structured hosting providers (ala cafe.daum.net) while "blogs" in English are the web pages and content of the authors themselves. Note to self: start reading more of them.

You should consider moving your blog to a Content Management System (CMS) when you have many blog authors (e.g. more than a handful), you have an approval criteria (are all posts posted on the main page?), or you have discreet administration requirements (e.g. some folks manage your links, some approve/disapprove articles, and others manage your comments). CMS's have a permissions structure built-in - in PostNuke, I can allow one user (or group of users) manage my banners, and another to manage the layout of the site (left/center/right column content).

If you want to demo several different blogging software packages (or CMS packages), visit OpenSouceCMS.com. The link didn't work from the classroom for some reason. WordPress is popular blogging tool - go ahead and give it a whirl. It will reset itself at the top of the hour (every other hour?).

  Trackback
Blogstuff Added trackback capability to Postnuke today. This page was a big help.

Not enough Postnuke documentation, and since I'm using AutoTheme as well, it was pretty easy to figure out.

  First Post
Blogstuff This isn't really my first post. About two years ago, I had a really bland Moveable Type blog called "ROKUS RANTS", short on design, long on cynicism. Yeah, imagine that.

So, what's the deal this time? A project at the office introduced me to PostNuke, the awesome content management system running this portal. Since my hosting provider offers point and click install, I figured what the heck, I ought to set this up again.

What's going to be posted here?
- Windows/Exchange and other tech babble.
- Links and comments about stuff I've seen on the 'net in the last few days.
- Links, scripts and other office stuff I need to write down.
- XML, XML, XML. Why? Because it's cool, and over the next few years, it'll revolutionize the way you use the internet.
- Sarcasm to a minimum. But I can't imagine writing about Korea with a straight face.

Advertisements will be introduced for two reasons - if I've bought something or pay for a service, I'll link to it. Whether or not they pay me for a referral will be disclosed. I'm interested in Amazon's Associates program as well - the SDK allows queries directly into their massive databases via SOAP, and I figure I may as well learn that eventually.
